AK Sports Report (Jan. 27-Feb. 1)

1st semester is in the books and January will also be soon!  As 2nd semester begins this week and the calendar flips to February, the Winter Sports season hits a critical stretch of competition.  We are also just over two weeks away from the official start of Spring Sports tryouts/practices!  Reminder to Spring student-athletes to make sure you take care of all required items for athletic participation.  The link to our AK Athletic Forms page is provided below and many Ticket-to-Play sessions will be held over the next two weeks.  Make sure to see your head coach for more information.  Best of luck to everyone on a great start to the new semester this week!




  • MEN’S BASKETBALLAK Men’s Basketball ran into a hot shooting South Meck squad on the road this past Friday.  The Knights mounted a furious 2nd half comeback to erase a 17-point halftime deficit, but ultimately fell in the final seconds to suffer their first conference loss.  The Knights still sit atop the standings in the SoMeck 7 Conference at 6-1 and 14-4 overall.  The Knights have a big opportunity to bounce back this week, with three games on the schedule including two in conference play and two Home games.  Let’s Go AK!

  • WOMEN’S BASKETBALLAK Women’s Basketball dropped a hard fought conference game on the road at rival South Meck on Friday.  The Lady Knights fell to 10-8 overall on the season and to 4-3 in SoMeck 7 Conference play.  The Lady Knights look to get back on track this week with three games on the slate, including two in conference play and two on the Home court.  Good luck this week ladies!

  • MEN’S & WOMEN’S SWIM & DIVEAK Swim & Dive enters NCHSAA post-season competition this week, as they compete in the 4A West Regional Championship meets.  Best of luck to our Aqua Knights as they look to perform strong and earn a spot in next week’s State Championship Meet!
    • 1/31 – NCHSAA 4A West Regional Diving Championships @ HFFA
    • 2/1 – NCHSAA 4A West Regional Swimming Championships @ MCAC-Uptown


  • WRESTLINGAK Wrestling heads into a big week of competition, starting with an opportunity to earn a share of the SoMeck 7 Conference title in the last dual match of the regular season at rival Providence on Wednesday!  The Knights will then enter post-season play as they compete in the SoMeck 7 Conference Tournament at Harding on Saturday.  Let’s Go AK……looking forward to seeing you on the mats this week!

  • INDOOR TRACK & FIELD:  AK Indoor Track & Field competed in a Polar Bear Meet at Cuthbertson this past week and will continue to prepare for the upcoming NCHSAA State Indoor Championship Meet this weekend by competing in another invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.  Keep working hard Knights!

  • Winter College Signing Period Ceremony:
    • AK Athletics will host our second signing ceremony of the year on Wednesday, February 5th (the first day of the new signing period) at 7:45 AM in the AK Auditorium.
    • Senior student-athletes that have committed to continue their academic and athletic careers at the inter-collegiate level and wishing to participate, please make sure to communicate with your head coach and/or Coach Knab.


  • College, Career, and Wellness Expo:
    • Come one, come all to the 2020 AK College, Career, & Wellness Expo on February 4, 2020 at AK from 5-7:30pm!  This event will provide parents, students and the community valuable information pertaining to Health and Wellness along with the opportunity of hearing from experts in the fields of college, professional, military and trade to explore future options for students and gain insightful knowledge for life after high school.  Speakers will discuss such topics as Financial Aid, College Admissions, Campus Life, and Healthy Lifestyle Decisions to name a few.
    • We will have raffles for gift cards and prizes throughout the evening, there will be food trucks to purchase snacks or dinner, AND students who attend will receive an INFORMAL GRADE to be applied to the class of their choice once they complete the required reflection before they leave each presentation.
    • We hope to see you there!


  • AK Athletic Boosters Senior Student-Athlete Scholarships:
    • The Ardrey Kell High School Athletic Booster Club (AKABC) will award ten (10) $1,000 Scholarships in May 2020.  Applications will be available to seniors in February of 2020.  The deadline for scholarship applications will be in March 2019.  If you are interested in being notified when the application process begins, please complete this form to be added to the AKABC Scholarship Committee’s email distribution list -
    • These scholarships will be awarded to AKHS senior student-athletes based on "Excellence in Academics",  "Excellence and Leadership in Athletics" and "Contributions to the AKHS Student-Athlete Community".  These scholarships will assist AKHS student-athletes in paying to attend a 2-year or 4-year college in the fall of 2020.
    • Please note:
      • You or a family member must be an active 2019-20 AKABC member to be considered by the AKABC Scholarship Selection Committee.  It is NOT too late to join and memberships start at $60 per year!
      • Each scholarship is paid directly to the recipient's college or university in the fall of 2020.  Students who receive full scholarships are not eligible.

  • Liz Murray Scholarship (sponsored by the Hood Hargett Breakfast Club) – ATTN Senior student-athletes, link provided below to apply.  The Hood Hargett Breakfast Club awards a monthly scholarship throughout the school year, with the first application deadline September 3rd.  Once your application is submitted, it will remain in the applicant pool for each month for the remainder of the school year.  AK has a strong history of winners…..let’s keep it going!  Click link below for more information and contact the athletic director if any questions:
