AK Sports Report (Feb. 10-15)

We hope that everyone survived and was safe during the severe storms that swept through the Charlotte area at the end of last week!  Now that 2nd semester has settled in and we hit the mid-point of February this week, a very busy week lies ahead.  Spring Sports officially starts this week with tryouts/practices on Wednesday!  Any student wishing to tryout for a Spring team must have their “Ticket-to-Play” by Wednesday or they will not be permitted to participate.  Coach Knab will be holding a final session for all teams on Tuesday immediately after school at his office……be sure to attend if you haven’t been cleared yet!  Meanwhile, Winter Sports continue down the final stretch of their season.  A special congratulations to AK swimmer Teresa Ivan on her NCHSAA State Championship Title in the Women’s 100yd Freestyle at this past Friday’s 4A State Meet!


  • AK Athletic Boosters Senior Student-Athlete Scholarships:
    • Applications are now being accepted for theArdrey Kell High School Athletic Booster Club (AKABC) Senior Scholarships.  The AKABC will award ten $1,000 scholarships to SENIOR student athletes.  Interested senior athletes can find details for eligibility, selection criteria and links to the application materials here



  • MEN’S BASKETBALLAK Men’s Basketball dropped a heartbreaker in overtime at Olympic in what was a showdown for 1st Place outright in the SoMeck 7.  The Knights will look to bounce back this week with two Home games in conference play to close out the regular season.  They enter this final week at 16-6 overall and 2nd Place outright at 7-3 in conference.  Good luck to the Knights finishing the regular season strong, capped by the season finale on Friday night against Providence on Senior Night!

  • WOMEN’S BASKETBALLAK Women’s Basketball got a huge road conference win this past week by defeating Olympic in an overtime thriller.  The Lady Knights improved to 7-3 in SoMeck 7 Conference play and 13-9 overall.  They enter the final week of the regular season tied for 2nd Place in the conference with two big Home games, including rival Providence on Friday for Senior Night!  Please come out early on Friday night to support the Lady Knights!

  • MEN’S & WOMEN’S SWIM & DIVEAK Swim & Dive’s season culminated at the NCHSAA 4A State Swim & Dive Championships at the end of this past week.  In the Diving competition on Thursday, congrats to David Schuster on a Top 15 State performances, finishing 13th Place overall!  In the Swimming Championships on Friday, two Knights reached the podium as medalists.  Congrats to Men’s swimmer Gaige Ryan on finishing 4th Place in the State in the 100yd Freestyle.  On the Women’s side, the Lady Knights had a strong team performance finishing Top 10 in the State in 9th Place overall.  The highlight of the State Meet for the Knights came from Teresa Ivan’s State Championship performance in the Women’s 100yd Freestyle!  Teresa also finished State Runner-Up in the 50yd Freestyle!  Great season overall by our Aqua Knights and a great way to end it with an Individual State Champion performance!

  • WRESTLINGAK Wrestling saw their Dual Team season come to an end in the 1st Round of the NCHSAA State Playoffs with a loss to a very good Davie County team.  This week, NCHSAA post-season competition begins for Individuals with the 4A West Regional Tournament at Hough.  Good luck to our Regional qualifying Knights on the mats this week!

  • INDOOR TRACK & FIELD:  AK Indoor Track & Field competed in the Charlotte City Championships over the weekend in the final meet of the season before the NCHSAA State Indoor Meet this coming weekend in Winston-Salem.  Congrats to Amber Jackson for taking 1st Place in both the Women’s High Jump and Triple Jump events.  Full results are below with other strong performances from our Knights.  Good luck to all our State qualifiers this coming weekend!

February Community Spotlight – Brad Smith / Hickory Tavern

Brad Smith is the founder and owner of Hickory Tavern Restaurant.  He is originally from Hickory, NC and went to high school with our own AK Varsity Men's Basketball Coach - Coach Michael Craft.  Brad has been in Charlotte since graduating from Appalachian State University and opened his first Hickory Tavern here in 1997. Charlotte is now the headquarters of Hickory Tavern.  Brad comments, "We’ve been in Charlotte for 22 years and we now have 28 Hickory Tavern’s throughout NC, SC, AL and TN."

Coach Craft says about his friend since high school, "Brad and the Hickory Tavern have been a tremendous sponsor of Ardrey Kell basketball for the past eleven years! We eat our pre-game meals for our home games at the Tavern and they couldn’t treat us any better. It has become part of our “routine” to eat at the Tavern and the players love it. In fact, Steven Santa Ana came home from college and asked if he could eat the pre-game meal at the Tavern with us and said that is one of the things that he missed most about AK basketball---eating at the Tavern!" 

Brad explains, "All of our Hickory Tavern locations strive to be highly visible in the local neighborhoods we serve.  With AK’s proximity to our Providence Road location – AK was an awesome choice as a community partner.  The families that attend AK are our neighbors and our guests and we enjoy supporting them, particularly in sports, as our brand definitely has a passion for sports. Many of the AK athletes have grown up with us so it is extra special to see them succeed on the field and in the classroom."

Coach Craft tells us, "We have also eaten at other Hickory Taverns when we travel. They have many locations around Charlotte and the region. When we played in the state championship in 2015, we ate lunch at the Providence location before we left and then ate our pregame meal at the Chapel Hill/Carrboro location. Brad and his son, Paxson, ate with us at both locations and supported us throughout the playoffs." 

Coach Craft recalls, "Three years ago we started an in-season tournament at Ardrey Kell. I asked Brad to sponsor it and his response was 'whatever you need we are all in.' We have used it as a way to have two home games and play private schools. This year we had an exciting game with Charlotte Latin. Hickory Tavern provided food to all the teams involved and the support staff."

Brad offers, "Our partnership with AK is simple.  We provide pre-game meals for Coach Craft and in return they decorate our office with championship plaques – EZPZ – particularly from our side
