AK Sports Report (May 16-21, 2022)

By Brian Knab, 05/15/22, 10:15PM EDT

(May 16-21, 2022)

The Spring Sports season is definitely in the closing stretch, with only a couple of teams remaining in NCHSAA postseason competition.  Best of to our AK Track & Field teams at the State Championship Meet this coming weekend and to our Lady Knights Women’s Soccer team as they begin their postseason run.  Have a great week AK!

  • BASEBALLAK Baseball entered as the #6 seed in the NCHSAA 4A West Region of the State Playoffs this past week.  The Knights hosted Hickory Ridge in Round 1 and dispatched the Ragin’ Bulls by a score of 4-0, setting up a 4th matchup of the season against conference rival Myers Park in the 2nd Round.  As with the three previous matchups, the game was a high level nailbiter between two of the top teams in the Region.  The game entered the 7th inning with the score tied 6-6, but the Mustangs capitalized on their opportunities and pulled out an 8-6 victory over the Knights.  Although it was a tough loss and difficult ending to the season, the Knights have much to celebrate with a 20-win season and an outright, undefeated SoMeck Conference Championship in the regular season.  Great season men…..keep your heads held high!

  • SOFTBALL: AK Softball opened the NCHSAA 4A State Playoffs @ Home in Round 1 this past week.  The Lady Knights hosted a strong and hot hitting West Forsyth squad that ultimately ending their season.  Still, very much to be proud of this season for AK Softball, including a 16-win season and SoMeck Runner-up in both the Regular season and Conference Tournament.  Great season ladies!

  • WOMEN’S SOCCER:  AK Women’s Soccer closed out the regular season with a Home victory over Hickory Ridge on Senior Night to finish with a 20-1-1 overall record on the season.  The Lady Knights are ranked #1 in the State according to MaxPreps heading into the NCHSAA 4A State Playoffs this week, but enter as only the #2 overall seed in the West Region……all good though, as the Lady Knights have showed grit and perseverance all season long and are prepared to earn it on the field in the postseason.  1st Round is @ Home on Monday vs. Porter Ridge……come out strong AK Nation!....the Lady Knights need your support for this postseason run @ Home!

  • 5/16 – 1ST Round @ Home vs. Porter Ridge – 7:00 PM
  • 5/19 – 2nd Round @ Home vs. TBD – 7:00 PM

  • MEN’S GOLF: AK Men’s Golf completed another strong season competing in the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament this past week at Pinehurst No. 8.  The field battled very tough and windy conditions over the two day tournament, with the Knights placing 12th Place overall as a team.  Congrats to our Knights on, once again, a team finish at States and also a SoMeck Conference Title this season!

  • MEN’S & WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD:  AK Track & Field competed in the NCHSAA 4A West Regional Championships over the weekend at Olympic…….meet results can be viewed below for both the Men’s and Women’s teams.  The week ahead brings the culminating event of the season, as the Knights compete in the NCHSAA 4A State Championship Meet on Saturday in Greensboro!  Best of luck to all our AK State Qualifiers…….hope you bring back some hardware to THE CASTLE!
