West Meck's Van Smith committed to Clemson on Saturday (8/31/13). The junior, who was number one on the Tigers recruitment list for the class of 2015, made his committment prior to the start of the Clemson/Georgia game. Smith, who is ranked in the Top 25 among North Carolina's best running backs and defensive players, is also listed in ESPN's Top 300 and had received offers from a number of top-flight colleges.
Smith chose Clemson over Penn State, Duke, North Carolina State, Michigan, UNCC, Kansas State and several others.
"Clemson provided the right environment for me to continue my pursuit of a quality education and to play the game that I love, which is football," said Smith. "The coaching staff was honest and fair with me throughout this whole recruiting process, and they were there from day one. Plus, Clemson is not far from home and it gives my family the chance to see me play. I'm very, very excited about this opportunity."
