Teen Dating Violence

By Jamie Billings, 02/10/15, 9:30AM EST

Come out and support your Titan basketball teams on Tuesday, February 10th as they take on the Cougars of Vance HIgh School.  JV games start at 3:30 and Varsity games will follow.  Games are at Vance High School.  Hopewell and Vance will be working with CMPD's Domestic Violence Unit to bring awareness to Teen Dating Violence.
According to statistics collected from the National Domestic Violence Hotline,
  • One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence.
  • Girls and young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence — almost triple the national average.
  • Eighty one percent of parents believe teen dating violence is not an issue or admit they don’t know if it’s an issue
If possible, students are asked to wear purple to school and the game that afternoon/evening since purple is the national color for Domestic Violence awareness.
Cheerleaders will cheer with purple pom-poms and Varsity Basketball Players will wear purple socks to support the awareness effort.
The CMPD Domestic Violence Unit will set up an information table near the gym with teen dating violence resources and information.
Guest speaker (Radio DJ Chewy from 103.3 FM) will address the audience between varsity games in reference to teen dating violence awareness.
If there are any questions, please feel free to contact the CMPD Domestic Violence Unit at 704-336-2811.
Thank you for your support of this awareness event!
