The South Meck men’s swim team took home their third consecutive 4A State Championship this Friday in Cary, North Carolina.
South Meck blew by the competition, not through standout individual performances, but through a true team effort with swimmers stepping up and making it to championship rounds, won by a staggering 71 more points than runners up Hough.
South Meck’s two event wins came from both Freestyle Relays- the 200 freestyle relay (Wes Youngblood, Kelle Stillman, Luke Johnson, Jacob Rauch) and the 400 freestyle relay (Christopher Pfuhl, Kelle Stillman, Wes Youngblood, Luke Johnson).
The Sabres made it to the podium in seven of their 12 events placing second in the 200 Freestyle (Wes Youngblood) and 100 Breaststroke (Luke Johnson) and third in the 200 Freestyle (Christopher Pfuhl), 200 IM (Luke Johnson), 500 Freestyle (Wes Youngblood), and 100 Breaststroke (Jacob Rauch).
South Meck collected 199 of their 279 points from events they did not win, and collected 99 of those points from swimmers who did not reach the podium in their events.
The Hough Men’s Swim team put up a valiant team effort after besting South Meck to the 4A Western Regional title last weekend.
The Huskies earned their runners-up spot through a number of swimmers stepping up in their events. Hough won the 200 Yard Medley Relay (Alexander McMurry, Will Chan, Coleman Manchester, Hernan Gonzales), the 100 Yard Breaststroke (Will Chan) and 100 Yard Backstroke (Alex McMurry).
Hough also saw the podium three times, placing second in the 400 Free Relay (Coleman Manchester, Hernan Gonzales, Karl Menkhaus, Kenneth Lowe) and 200 IM (Will Chan), and third in 1 Meter Diving (Logan Andrews).
