Olympic Football is set to open the 2017 season in the 5th Annual Charlotte Kickoff Night

This annual tradition promises exciting matchups, new partnerships, a fireworks display and an exceptional start to the high school football season

Charlotte, N.C. — Scholastic Sports Marketing (SSM) is proud to announce the fifth installment of “Charlotte Kickoff Nightpowered by OrthoCarolina. After the 2016 event and its powerful tripleheader, the high school community strongly suggested that the 2017 edition also showcase three games. Once again “Charlotte Kickoff Nightpowered by OrthoCarolina” will be played at Memorial Stadium in the heart of Uptown Charlotte on Saturday, August 19, 2017.

“OrthoCarolina is a proven, long-time supporter of high school football across the region. For decades, we have been thrilled to help power meaningful events throughout this community.  This year’s Kickoff Night will once again make an impact and OrthoCarolina is happy to support it,” said Blair Primis, Vice President of Marketing for OrthoCarolina.

First up at 2:00pmVance will square off against West Mecklenburg in a match-up that will feature two schools with a proud tradition. The Cougars of Vance put up impressive scoring totals in 2016, tallying 60 points or higher in four games and posting 40 and 50 points (or more) regularly. Last year they finished 13-2 and lost in the 4AA Regionals. West Mecklenburg has seen a steady stream of student-athletes flow to Division I programs over the last few years, and had one of their best seasons of late finishing 9-4 in 2016 under first year coach Jarvis Davis. This CKO matchup will be a rematch of what was one of the best games in all of Charlotte last year, as Vance scored 21 unanswered late in the 4th to win in OT and knock off West Meck.

The 5:00pm game will be an interesting one as it will be the first time Olympic has ever taken the field against Providence Day.  It should be a great contest between a public and private school. This game will be head coach Jason Fowler’s first for the Trojans since his move from Rocky River last season. Providence Day head coach Adam Hastings’ Charger program is budding with young talent and already making headlines.

At 8:00pm, game three features a rematch from both 2015 and 2016 as the ever-growing rivalry between Charlotte Country Dayand Myers Park continues. This game is becoming a staple in the tradition of opening weekend. 2015 was the first time these two had played one another. The crowds filled the stands of Memorial Stadium in 2016 and the 2017 tilt is already generating a steady buzz. This is the first time during their participation in the event that Charlotte Country Day and Myers Park will match up in the night cap.

Following this final game as a true sign of the celebration of the start of football season — the fans will enjoy a fireworks show.

“Wow, has it been five years already,” said James Companion of Scholastic Sports Marketing, with a smile. “The Charlotte Kickoff Night event continues to exceed our expectations.  We’re going to step up the celebration this year with a first class fireworks show from field level.  Similar to what you’d see at a professional game.” He added, “We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from OrthoCarolina, CMS and all of the participating schools as we all continue to provide a positive experience for the youth of our community.”

Memorial Stadium has been a sports venue staple within Uptown Charlotte since it’s construction in the late 1930’s. While an extended amount of time has passed, the city and county have done their part to keep the historic stadium a destination for teams, events and leagues. A number of renovations and upgrades have been completed over the past two years, most notably a new press box on the north side of the stadium – including accessible seating – a new concourse also on the north side of the stadium, a new south side retaining wall, new stadium lighting, and improved bleacher seating.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Middle School Athletics.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online: $10 for Saturday’s triple header.

Also, announced today is a collaboration among Academy Sports + Outdoors, Scholastic Sports Marketing, and the participating 2017 Charlotte Kickoff Night schools. The “Back to School Giveback” program is designed to give 20 area school children an opportunity to shop for $100 dollars’ worth of back-to-school merchandise (such as bookbags, school shoes, and gym clothes). More details about the collaboration will be shared later.

Finally, today it was announced that there will be a new addition to the Charlotte Kickoff family that will take place this fall. More details to follow this summer.
