AK SPORTS REPORT

(March 16—April 6, 2020)

This past week has been like nothing any of us have ever experienced.  We are obviously dealing with unprecedented times, as the coronavirus has turned into a global pandemic.  As our National and State Government continue to deal with the spread of the virus and make decisions on the best course of action to protect the population as a whole, the NCHSAA made the decision to suspend the Spring Sports season beginning this past Saturday (March 14th) through Monday, April 6th.  During this suspension period, no contests, practices, skill development, workouts or open facilities can take place.  The athletic department is also postponing any end-of-season banquets until further notice.

We are remaining optimistic that the Spring Sports season will eventually resume, but obviously, these are unpredictable times.  Our student-athletes and coaches have put in so much work preparing for the season and have looked forward to competing to accomplish team and individual goals.  More than anything, we are hopeful that play will resume for our Senior student-athletes, that have given so much time and dedication representing AK!  Whatever happens, we will not let our Seniors’ hard work and accomplishments go unnoticed and we will be working on some contingency plans for Senior recognitions depending on what transpires in the coming weeks.

To end on a positive note, what an amazing night we had this past Friday at THE CASTLE!  We were fortunate to be able to schedule a big night of Home action on our last play date before the suspension of play, with Varsity Baseball, Softball and Women’s Soccer all posting big wins!  Thank you to everyone that came out to support our Knights, as we had a busy campus with AK Nation coming out strong.  It was great to see so many alumni back as well!  Friday night was a great reminder of what make Sports so meaningful and impactful.  The competition, wins, championships, etc. are all great, but what is truly special are the relationships that are built through sport.  As our Mission states, it truly was a prideful experience getting to share many special moments Friday night with our student-athletes, coaches, alumni and parents…….here is hoping to have the opportunity for more this Spring season!

GO KNIGHTS!  PROTECT THE CASTLE!

2019-2020 Winter Sports All-Conference Knights

SPRING SPORTS

  • BASEBALLAK Baseball had a strong second week of the season, going 3-1 and also opening SoMeck 7 Conference play at 2-0 with a sweep over Harding.  The Knights improved their overall record to 4-2 after a big non-conference win at Home over Charlotte Catholic on Friday night and will look to keep that momentum rolling when play resumes.

  • SOFTBALL: AK Softball opened up SoMeck 7 Conference play with a sweep over Harding, followed by another victory over non-conference opponent East Meck to improve to 4-2 overall, 2-0 in conference play.  The Lady Knights look to continue their strong play when contests resume after the upcoming break.

  • WOMEN’S SOCCER:  AK Women’s Soccer saw their trip out East for the annual Brittany Showcase event cancelled due to the obvious recent events, but were able to schedule a Home match against Charlotte Catholic this past Friday before the suspension of play.  The Lady Knights battled a tough Catholic team to the end in what looked like would be a 0-0 draw.  But some late game magic happened with an amazing goal with 8 seconds left to give the Lady Knights a great team win going into the break!

  • MEN’S LACROSSE: AK Men’s Lacrosse continued their impressive start to the season with two more victories this past week, beginning with a win at Independence to improve to 2-0 in conference play.  The Knights then defeated a very good Northwest Guilford team at Home in a game between two of the top teams in the West Region……..great job men!

  • WOMEN’S LACROSSE: AK Women’s Lacrosse earned a pair of impressive wins this past week, one in the conference opener against Independence and one in the Home opener against Catawba Ridge.  The Lady Knights evened their early season record at 2-2 to pick up some momentum before the break in play.

  • MEN’S GOLF: AK Men’s Golf moved their SoMeck 7 Conference record to 2-0 with a win over Olympic this past week.  The Knights also took on defending State Champs Myers Park on their Home course for a big test in non-conference play, coming up short in the dual match.  The Knights will look to get back into match action after the break is over in a few weeks.

  • MEN’S TENNIS: AK Men’s Tennis went 2-0 in non-conference play this past week, including a big win over another top team in the Region in Hough by a score of 7-2.  The Knights then defeated Independence in their last match to take a 2-1 overall record into the break and will look to get off to a strong start in conference play when returning to action.

  • MEN’S & WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD:  AK Track & Field saw the start of their season delayed by the NCHSAA suspension of competition.  Hopefully the Knights will begin their season on the Home track on April 8th when the break comes to an end!

March Community Spotlight – Rob Trevillian / Little Burger in Rea Farms

The AK Golf Tournament (Monday, April 6th) is one month away and as we sign up golfers and community sponsors, one of our newest business partners is participating in the Golf Tournament in a big way.

Rob Trevillian, Manager of Little Big Burger in Rea Farms at Ardrey Kell and Providence Roads, has created an AK Burger! Rob offered, "Twenty percent of the profits of each AK burger sold will go back to the AK Booster Club to support your athletes."

Rob grew up in Raleigh and is the youngest of 4 kids.  His parents modeled what it meant to be a part of their community through the Sanderson Booster Club.  He remembers, "They ran the concession stand for years and were also the leaders of the local youth group at church.  I have never known anything else. My love for mentoring young kids and supporting athletic programs comes straight from my parents."

After attending NC State and working as a sports trainer there for football and wrestling, Rob took a summer job with Piedmont Airlines that ended up lasting 18 years. Twenty seven years ago, Rob moved to Charlotte and raised his family here. He has been married 31 years and has 2 grown daughters, also living in Charlotte.

"I chose Little Big Burger because of the company's commitment to the local community.  One of my biggest goals is to hire teens with good attitudes, but otherwise a blank slate, and help them learn a good work ethic, respect for each other, and help give them a solid and productive foundation for the rest of their lives."  Rob attributes his success to his coaches and his sports team experiences and is passionate about giving back to local sports programs for today's student athletes.

Go get an AK burger today!  20% back to AKABC!
