Ryan Sklar (138) and Gianmarco Price (182) both placed at the NCHSAA State Tournament in Greensboro, NC by taking sixth place in their respective weight classes.  This is the second year in a row that the Mustangs have had two wrestlers reach the podium.  We are very proud of these two wrestlers.

Senior Gianmarco Price started off the NCHSAA State Tournament with a 7-4 decision to advance to the quarterfinals.  With this win, he has just reached 100 for his career!  We would like to congratulate him on this great accomplishment.

The Mustang wrestling team sent nine wrestlers to the 4A West Region Tournament, with five qualifying for the NCHSAA State Tournament.  Pat Schellpfeffer (132) and Ryan Sklar (138) both took second place.  Will Lowery (145), Gianmarco Price (182), and Jake Harkleroad (195) all finished in third place.  Their next stop is Greensboro Coliseum where they will battle for State honors.

Myers Park Wrestling would like to welcome Michael Chase as their Volunteer Assistant Coach.  Coach Chase wrestled for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a three time NCAA Qualifier and two time ACC Champion.  He is also a current NCAA wrestling official.  We are very happy to have him on staff.

Two Mustang wrestlers placed at the 2018 NCHSAA State Tournament.  Daniel Duffy placed second at 152 pounds, and Harrison Sklar placed fifth at 160 pounds.  Also finishing in the top eight of his weight class at 138 pounds was Cliff Ricciardi.  We congratulate these three seniors on an outstanding finish to their high school careers!

Myers Park Welcomes new Head Wrestling Coach

Coach Tony Forte

Please welcome Tony Forte as the new Head Wrestling Coach of Myers Park High School.  Coach Forte brings a wealth of experience to the program.

Coach Forte grew up wrestling in New Jersey with his High School highlights being a District 18 Champion and two time Somerset County Tournament place winner.  After high school he went on to wrestle at the Division I level for the legendary Gray Simons at Old Dominion University.

After his college career was over, he began his coaching career.  Coach Forte started out at the Pingry School in Martinsville, NJ.  While at Pingry, he coached a four time NJ State Place-winner who also went on to have a very successful career at the University of Pennsylvania.  After Pingry, he began coaching at Rhino Wrestling Club in Wall, NJ.  While there, he helped coach numerous wrestlers who achieved State and National honors.

After he decided to move to South Carolina to pursue his Masters Degree and Teaching Certificate at Winthrop, Coach Forte coached at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill.  While at South Pointe, he helped plan and run practices, and also guided several wrestlers to place at the State Tournament.

Coach Forte then left South Pointe to open the South Carolina branch of Rhino Wrestling Club in Rock Hill.  In three years of being open, he coached several State Champions and place winners at all levels.  In addition, he coached one Middle School All-American and built a reputation as being one of the best clubs in South Carolina.

After Rhino closed in the fall of 2016, he joined the staff at Fort Mill High School for the 2016-2017 season as an Assistant Varsity Coach and Head Youth Coach.  During his season there, the Varsity team was ranked as high as number one in the state before falling in the Upper State Finals and had three wrestlers place in the top four at the SCHSL Tournament.

Coach Forte is very excited for this opportunity to lead the Myers Park wrestling program.

If you haven’t done so yet, definitely check out the new wrestling room. It’s a phenomenal new facility and huge upgrade from the previous room. The new room includes 8 new wrestling mats, 7 pull up bars, 4 climbing ropes, wall to wall padding, white board and cork board, tv, and timer. It was the culmination of almost a year of work by the wrestling parents and wrestlers and made possible with the fundraising efforts last year by the wrestling parents and wrestlers.
