Basketball

4A Men's Basketball

At the 4A Men’s Basketball State Championship, Myers Park collected the program’s first state championship in school history, completing an outstanding 28-4 season. The Mustangs won the program’s third Regional Championship and appeared in the State Championship Game for the first time since 1966.

Elijah Strong was awarded the Most Outstanding Player honors for Myers Park after accounting for 22 points, 7 rebounds, and a block.

A Sportsmanship Award was given to Sam Walters from Myers Park.

Chambers and North Mecklenburg also advanced far into the tournament, playing each other in the fourth round of the tournament where North Meck emerged victorious  105-92.  North Meck met eventual champs, Myers Park in the regional round.

3A Men's Basketball

West Charlotte  advanced far into the 3A Men’s Basketball State Championships, emerging victorious over Franklin 61-58, Lake Norman Charter 80-54, Northwest Cabarrus 85-58, and Ben Smith 66-62.  West Charlotte met eventual 3A State Champions , Central Cabarrus in the semi-finals, falling 78-51.

4A Women's Basketball

North Mecklenburg advanced far into the 4A Women’s state tournament, beating McDowell 67-38, Alexander Central 54-50, and AC Reynolds 56-37.  North Meck met eventual State Champions, Lake Norman in the fourth round,  losing 57-50.

Wrestling

Men's Wrestling

At the 4A Individual Wrestling State Championships, CMS’s Cameron Stinson of Mallard Creek captured a third consecutive state wrestling championship, winning the 120-pound weight class title and remaining undefeated in his three-year high school wrestling career.

In the 4A Team ranking, Hough finished 7th with a score of 49. Strong finishes by CMS wrestlers included:

4A 126 pounds 4th: Jackson Rowling (Hough). Sixth: Carter Bockenstedt (Weddington).

4A 132 pounds Third: Brandt Fajerman (Hough).

4A 195 lbs Fourth: Alexander Jones (South Mecklenburg). Sixth: Bo Schiano (Hough).

Women's Wrestling Invitational

The NCHSAA crowned champions at its Girls Wrestling Invitational. The two-day event culminated with competitions in 12 weight classes.

CMS Athletics wrestler Sarem Desalegn of Mallard Creek placed fourth in the 138 lb Division.

This marks the final year the NCHSAA will hold the girls wrestling invitational. Beginning with the 2023-2024 season, girls wrestling will become a sanctioned sport in North Carolina, making the sport eligible to hold state championship competitions.

Swimming/ Diving

4A Women's Swim/Dive

The Myers Park women’s team earned their second straight 4A Swim/Dive state title, powered by the swimming of Kiley Wilhelm. Wilhelm was selected as the Most Outstanding Performer for the meet, winning gold in the 100 Backstroke and the 100 Butterfly. She powered to the wall in 51.20 seconds in the 100 Butterfly and earned a win in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 53.27 seconds

Wilhelm also took part in two victorious relay teams, swimming the third leg of the 200 Medley Relay with Kayman Neal, Avery Klamfoth and Sofia Plaza as they set a new all classification State Meet Record with a time of 1:42.10. Wilhelm led off the 400 Free Relay, combining with Grace Tuchi, Juia Pou, and Neal to touch in 3:24.60 and win the event to round out their night.

Of note in the women’s meet, Hough’s Grace Rainey downed the all classification State Meet Record in the 100 Breaststroke, winning the race in 1:00.27.

A 2023 4A Swimming & Diving Sportsmanship Award went to Kiley Wilhelm from Myers Park in the Women’s Division.

4A Men's Swim/Dive

Providence men were the 4A Swim/Dive state champions on the men’s side, edging Marvin Ridge by a 203-192 count in the final team scoring. 

Ben Delmar was the lone Panther to win an individual event, earning gold in the 200 Individual Medley posting a time of 1:48.78.

 

A 2023 4A Swimming & Diving Sportsmanship Award went to Hayden Stallings from Providence for the Men’s Division.

Indoor Track/Field

4A Women's Track/Field

At the 4A Womens Indoor Track/Field State Championship, Olympic  finished second in the rankings. This success was highlighted by two 1st place finishes: The Olympic  4X400 girls relay team won with a time of 4:00.31 and long jumper Jahalia Wright claimed the 4A title with a leap of 37-06.00.  Olympic’s Wright also took second in the Triple Jump with teammate Carmen PenaSoto jumping to third place.

 

Also claiming state championship gold from CMS was Mary Bonner Dalton from Myers Park in the 3200M.

 

CMS athletes swept the Shotput: junior Tyler Glover of Ardrey Kell threw 42-11.25 to place first,  junior Macy Dulaney of Mallard Creek threw 40-05.50 for second place, and sophomore Alexandria Jefferson of Rocky River tossed 40-01.50 for third.

4A Men's Track/Field

At the 4A Mens Indoor Track/Field State Championship, Ardrey Kell senior Xavier Branker took home gold in the 55M Hurdles with a time of 7.48.

Other notable finishes for CMS athletes included:

Providence senior Devin Coleman’s third place throw in Mens Shotput 52-05.25

 

S. Mecklenburg senior Chris Brown’s third place jump in Mens Triple Jump  43-11.75
